Sun Coast SUPLive paddle conditions, Crystal River to Siesta Key

Weeki Wachee Springs SP

North coast launch

Weeki Wachee Springs SP is a north-coast kayak and paddleboard launch, $10 park + launch fee to park.

This is the headspring launch at Weeki Wachee, the first-magnitude spring that has been pushing out gin-clear water near 74 degrees since the mermaid shows opened here in 1947. The flow is so large it replaces the whole upper river about once an hour, which is why the bottom reads like an aquarium and why the state guards it so hard. You launch through the park concession, not off a public ramp, so it runs on reservations and a set window: you put in at the top, ride the current downstream, and get shuttled back from a pickup point a couple of miles down. The entire stretch from the headspring to Rogers Park is a Springs Protection Zone now, which means no anchoring, no beaching, and no standing on the bottom, and the fine for it is real. In the cold months manatees move up into the warm spring run and you may find yourself sharing the water with one. Two honest notes: summer weekends book out and get crowded, and because it is a one-way downstream paddle you cannot simply turn around, you ride the shuttle home.

Spring-river: mullet and the occasional redfish and snook down toward the lower river. Cool, clear water at the head.

What about the current?

Current readings come from Weeki Wachee River (USGS, about 0.4 mi away).

How do I share the water here?

The whole run from the headspring to Rogers Park is a Springs Protection Zone: no anchoring, no beaching, no standing on the bottom. Stay over the grass and sand on your board so you are not stirring up the spring bed, and give any manatee the full channel.
