Fort Hamer Park (launch)

South coast launch

Fort Hamer Park (launch) is a south-coast kayak and paddleboard launch, free to park.

Fort Hamer is the calm, upriver launch in Parrish, a small county park on the south bank of the upper Manatee River under a canopy of big oaks. The kayak launch sits apart from the boat ramp, so you can slide in without dodging trailers, and the water here is sheltered and easy, a tidal river that winds upstream into a quiet, natural stretch good for wildlife and downstream toward the wider river and Tampa Bay. It is the kind of place where you will often share the water with the youth and masters rowing crews that train out of the county boathouse next door, long shells sliding past in the early light. A couple of practical notes: the current picks up when the tide is moving or after heavy rain runoff, the water near the dock runs shallow so mind your fins at low tide, and the ramp can get a wait at peak times since boaters love it too. Shaded picnic tables, clean restrooms, and an ice dispenser make it an easy spot to make a morning of.

What's the fishing like?

Upper tidal Manatee River: snook, redfish, and trout along the banks, mangrove snapper and sheepshead on structure.

How do I share the water here?

This stretch of the upper Manatee River is a cold-month refuge the manatees swim miles to reach, drawn by the warmer, calmer water. Keep to the channel and off the shallow grassy edges where they feed, never chase or crowd one for a photo, and if you fish, pack your line out: the same quiet banks that make this a good wildlife paddle are where tangled line does the most harm.
