Fort Island Gulf Beach

North coast launch

Fort Island Gulf Beach is a north-coast kayak and paddleboard launch, free to park.

In a county built on springs and salt marsh, this is the rare spot where you can stand on actual Gulf sand. Getting here is half the appeal: the road runs west out of Crystal River and becomes a causeway across miles of open estuary, herons and wading birds working the shallows on both sides, before it dead-ends at a low white beach pointed straight at the sunset. The water is shallow, warm, and sandy-bottomed, so it is a forgiving place to launch and an easy one to swim. Dolphins cruise the near shore often enough that you should keep half an eye on the water. A couple of honest notes: the 2024 hurricanes took the old restroom building, so for now it is portable toilets only, and the boat ramp is still closed, though none of that stops you carrying a board down to the sand. Pets and fishing are not allowed on the beach itself, the pier is where the lines go.

County Gulf beach with parking, restrooms, and a sandy walk-in launch. Verify any seasonal fees on site.

How clear is the water?

Open Gulf water, sandy bottom, churns up in any wind.

What will I see?

What's the fishing like?

Inshore Gulf: spotted seatrout, redfish, and snook along the grass and sand, with sheepshead on nearby structure.

How do I share the water here?

The shallows off the beach are seagrass flats that shorebirds and wading birds feed on. Walk your board out past the grass before you climb on rather than dragging a fin through it, and give any resting flock of birds a wide arc instead of paddling them up off the sand.
