Crystal River (Hunter Springs)
North coast launch
Crystal River (Hunter Springs) is a north-coast kayak and paddleboard launch, $5 / vehicle to park.
This is where you go when you want the postcard. The springs pump 72°F water year-round, so the river stays a translucent blue-green even when the Gulf is stirred up. Paddle out from Hunter Springs Park and you'll see fish under your board like you're floating on an aquarium. In winter the manatees crowd in by the hundreds, which is why the spring head is closed to paddlers November through March, only swimmers with no fins or boards allowed in the protected zone. Local note: Three Sisters Springs across the river is the main manatee refuge. Give it wide berth even in open season. The town of Crystal River has been a manatee tourism hub since the 1960s, and the conservation rules here are stricter than almost anywhere in Florida. Worth the drive once, worth it again.

Paved lot at Hunter Springs Park with restrooms, a launch ramp, and free loaner life vests. Roughly 5 dollars to park. The spring head is closed to boards and kayaks November 15 to March 31 for manatee season, and winter weekends fill up fast, so arrive early.
How clear is the water?
Spring water stays clear year-round: the springs feed in faster than anything can muddy it
What will I see?
- Turtles, gar, and the occasional summer manatee that didn't migrate
What's the fishing like?
Brackish spring water: redfish and spotted seatrout, snook in the warm months, mullet throughout. Clear enough to sight fish. Manatee zone, mind the winter closure.
What about the current?
Current readings come from Hunter Spring Run (USGS, right at the launch).
How do I share the water here?
Three Sisters Springs across the river is the main winter manatee refuge, so give it a wide berth even when it is open. Anywhere you share water with them it is passive observation only by law: no chasing, no touching, and stay outside the marked sanctuary buoys.
